When cognitive and behavioral changes interfere with daily life, that’s when we use the word dementia. If these changes don’t yet affect independence but disrupt relationships or work, doctors might call it mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild behavioral impairment (MBI). These two conditions can appear together. Spotting these shifts early—especially in people over 50—can help us intervene before things get worse.
