Researchers from the University of California San Diego, analyzed stored blood samples from 2,766 women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study between 1996 and 1999. All participants were cognitively healthy at baseline, aged 65 to 79, and randomized to one of three groups: estrogen plus progestin, estrogen alone, or placebo. The blood samples, collected at enrollment, were analyzed in 2024 using the ALZpath Simoa p-tau217 evaluation, a highly sensitive tool for detecting phosphorylated tau protein in blood.
