Physical Activity and Protein Intake Strategies to Improve Sarcopenia and Mental Health

Sarcopenia is defined as the age-related loss of muscle mass, strength, and function. This pathological condition is associated with cognitive impairment and depression, contributing to mental disorders in older adults. Therefore, a healthy lifestyle consisting of good nutrition, regular physical activity, and/or exercise should be promoted as a means of prevention. Regular physical activity and/or exercise has a positive effect on neuroplasticity, through the modulation of biomarkers such as nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, cathepsin B, homocysteine, and amyloid beta-protein in older adults.
