People with dementia have distinct brain wave patterns. Researchers are investigating how EEG tests could identify people in the earliest stages of the disease when treatments are mostly likely to work. In the absence of blood or other biomarkers to detect dementia before symptoms start to become obvious, the best option currently available for early diagnosis is high-tech neuroimaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or positron emission tomography (PET) scans.
