Deaths from other leading killers — including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and HIV — declined significantly between 2000 and 2019. But deaths from Alzheimer’s disease in the U.S. increased by about 145%, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Despite enormous efforts and billions of dollars invested in research, the shadowy illness still has no effective treatment or cure.
