One fine morning, my grandparents got in their car and drove away from their house. our days later they turned up two hours away in a wrecked car on the side of the road—with no clue what had happened in between! Diagnosis: Dementia. Both of them. At the same time. Stepping in to provide care for them was one of the toughest things I ever experienced. Everything happened all at once, and only being 29 years old myself, I didn’t know the first thing to do for them. Oh, I learned, alright—in the white-hot fire of mistakes and confusion.
