Her face tightened, every muscle pulling inward around a fear she could not name. The phone trembled in her right hand, its glow too bright, its voice too quick, the words sliding past before they could settle into meaning. The chatbot repeated its question — Are you still there? — calm, patient, impossibly far away. She did not know how to answer. She did not know what it wanted from her, or why it sounded so certain that she should respond to something. Panic rose in her chest, hot and unfamiliar, and before she understood, her arm had already moved into motion. The phone left her hand and struck the wall with a loud crash.
