George, a retired veterinarian living in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s eight years ago. 

His early symptoms of Parkinson’s included slowness, lack of arm swing, very small handwriting, and difficulty contributing to and keeping apace with conversations.

“About a year after my Parkinson’s diagnosis I lost the sight in one eye with a retinal arterial occlusion. Not long after that, I started to see unusual things like balloons, small pets and children, and others would tell me they weren’t actually there. The hallucinations did not bother me, though others became worried..."

My Mum, Anna, was the strongest person I’ve ever known. She raised three daughters on her own, juggling multiple jobs, often across day and night shifts. 

Although this meant she couldn’t spend as much time with us as she would have liked through my teen years, she taught us how to be strong, independent and hard-working women.  

Mum was at her happiest when she was cooking and feeding people. She adored having friends and family over and seeing them enjoy her food. She really was the most incredible cook. 

But, when she entered her mid 70s, I started to notice changes in Mum’s behaviour. Documents and paperwork were stacking up, with bills left unpaid. She had become forgetful, often leaving her food burning on the hob. And she began to withdraw socially, not wanting visitors to come around. This was completely out of character for her.

Tracey’s story: ‘Caring for a person with dementia can be all-consuming’

When a person who is dear to you first experiences memory problems, you will probably look for a rational explanation.

After my aunt first forgot about our lunch appointment, I thought it happened because she was distracted. When the same thing happened for the second time, it became weird. But when she left home with the stove still burning, that’s when my alarm bells really started ringing. I decided to finally take her to the doctor.

Here are a few ways to support someone who may be in denial or lack insight about their situation. tuation. Once the results were in, I was shocked and terrified about what stood in front of us. The doctor’s words sounded so chaotic in my head when she talked about Alzheimer's Disease, its symptoms, progression and the need for constant care. When I came home, I decided to read as much as I could about this condition.

Quando a mesma coisa aconteceu pela segunda vez, ficou estranho. Mas quando ela saiu de casa com o fogão ainda aceso, foi quando meus alarmes realmente começaram a soar. Decidi finalmente levá-la ao médico.

Foi quando fiquei chocada e apavorada com o que estava diante de nós. As palavras da médica soaram tão caóticas em minha cabeça quando ela falou sobre a doença de Alzheimer, seus sintomas, a progressão e a necessidade de cuidados constantes. 

Quando voltei para casa, decidi ler o máximo que pudesse sobre essa doença.

Dad was struggling to care for Mum – he was developing dementia too.

He was doing his best, but it was horrendous for him. I didn't realise at first, but he was also developing dementia. He was struggling to manage the medication for Mum, he was getting confused when we were out.

One day I arrived to find he'd called the police because he thought I'd attacked him. After speaking to us at length they realised he was unwell. A few months later, he started going missing, at first for hours, then for days.

He was taken to a hospital assessment unit and ended up staying for nearly nine months. They thought he might have had a transient ischaemic attack (a mini stroke).

"Papai estava lutando para cuidar de mamãe que tinha demência. E estava fazendo o melhor que podia, mas, claro, essa situação era terrível para ele. Eu não percebi no início, mas ele também estava desenvolvendo demência e lutava para administrar a medicação para a mamãe. Então começou a ficar confuso quando saíamos.

Um dia cheguei em casa e vi que meu pai havia chamado a polícia porque achava que eu o havia atacado. Depois de conversarmos longamente, eles perceberam que ele não estava bem.

Carol Turner and her brother Ray Smith have seen up close what it’s like to live with Alzheimer’s disease. In 2020, their father died of it at age 93 in a dementia ward, after months of seeing his family through a window because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Not long after, their mother showed the signs—she had trouble sleeping, she couldn’t recognize some faces, and her beloved brownie recipe didn’t come out quite right. Brain scans revealed abundant beta-amyloid, the sticky protein that is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s.

What Life Is Like for Caregivers of Those With Dementia

Results of a recent AARP survey find that caregivers of loved ones with dementia put in longer hours and find themselves having to make more adjustments in their lives than caregivers of people with other health conditions.

The greatest Dad I could have ever asked for – Lizzie’s story

My dad was a gentle giant in every sense. He was patient, kind and slow to anger. As father-daughter relationships go, ours couldn’t have been stronger. 

Yes he was my dad, but he was also one of my best friends. We shared a love for the outdoors, music, sport and always finding ways to make each other laugh. 

One of the earliest signs something wasn’t right was with Dad’s driving. He always did the long-haul driving when we’d go away, but he began to have trouble with the clutch and the gears. In 2017, we went on a family holiday to Canada. Dad was getting ready to drive us to the Airbnb, and he froze.

Dementia caregiving comes with many challenges. Don't make it more difficult than it has to be. It doesn't matter what type of dementia someone has - Alzheimer's disease, lewy body dementia, or frontotemporal dementia- where you focus your attention matters a lot.

My mom has dementia. She was my best friend, but the person I knew is gone.

Only two years ago, Mother's Day was a wonderful, beautiful holiday. My mother had quickly and happily adjusted to her new life in a senior apartment complex after I moved her in April. Her house had become too much for her to handle, and the proceeds from the sale paid for her apartment rent.

She loved her new life and all the friends she was making. They announced families were invited to an upcoming Mother's Day brunch and she wanted to show off her family to her new friends.

My Husband Was Diagnosed With Dementia at 36. Here’s How I First Knew Something Was Wrong

In 2016, Kristin Holloway’s 36-year-old husband, Lee, suddenly lost interest in his job and stopped taking care of his personal hygiene, among other drastic behavioral changes. 

His doctors suspected he was experiencing psychological distress—but after a series of tests, Lee was diagnosed with frontotemporal degeneration (FTD), the most common type of dementia in people younger than 60. Now, Kristin sits on the board of The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, where she helps fund FTD research and innovation. 

Here’s her story, as told to health writer Julia Ries.

Certain types of jobs can lower risk of developing dementia in old age, new study finds

A new study determined that people working in mentally stimulating occupations are less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment and dementia in the later years of their lives. 
The review was published in the journal, Neurology, and involved researchers from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University. According to researchers, the kind of jobs done by individuals in their 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's can determine their brain health and functionality in retirement.

Generation Z Cares For Loved Ones With Long-term Health Conditions

As a 19-year-old biology student at Palomar College eight years ago, Brandon Feldt was working toward transferring to a four-year university as a pre-med student.

That all changed when his mother, Araceli Feldt, exhibited signs of dementia at age 56. At first, Feldt said, her speech and behavior changed, but as her condition worsened, she started having seizures, as well.

With his younger sister at home and still in high school, the Escondido resident decided to drop everything to keep his family together. Feldt paused his academic goals as he helped his sister learn to drive, get her driver’s license, complete high school, look for colleges and apply for financial aid — all while supporting his mother during the first three years of dementia and the process of diagnosis.

Should We Move Our Loved One With Dementia into a Nursing Home?

Deciding to move a loved one into a nursing home is an incredibly difficult one. I found it difficult and stressful considering this move for my own loved one, even with 20 years of experience in dementia and aged care. Sometimes the decision has to be made quickly, such as when the person is in hospital. Sometimes the decision takes much longer and is made over months, or even years.

There are some important things you should consider when trying to decide the best option for you and your loved one. I’ve outlined six here.

What Caregivers Should Know About Learning Disabilities and Dementia

Caregivers of those living with individuals with learning disabilities are well-placed to recognize the symptoms of dementia, even the early subtle changes. These symptoms could include changes in mood and behaviors, the time it takes for the individual to carry out or complete tasks, differences in the way they approach those tasks, and changes in their memory, reasoning and language. When these changes start taking place, the caregiver will have new needs that have to be met.

What Dementia Teaches About the Soul

I am reminded of interactions with my grandmother. Throughout her life, she would often sing at random times while she was cooking, cleaning, or simply walking about the house. She would sing songs — songs of faith. She would often sing songs like "Amazing Grace," "I’ll Fly Away," and other great hymns she was raised with. When she was old and her memories and her body were fading, she persisted in her habits of singing. While she did not have dementia, observing her revealed much about the nature of the soul of which several studies are confirming: there is more to the soul than we originally thought.

People with dementia may struggle with many aspects of their lives that we all take for granted, such as remembering new information, holding a conversation, decision-making, reading, writing and understanding times and places.

Dementia is a disease that damages brain cells, leading to progressive deterioration in memory, thinking and communication, as well as personality changes. Nearly 50 million people worldwide are living with the condition and numbers are expected to rise as the population gets increasingly older. About two-thirds of dementia cases are Alzheimer’s disease, but there are over 200 other types of dementia. Even within these categories, patients may present in different ways.

Many Americans struggle with what to say and do when a family member, friend, co-worker or neighbor is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia. The shock of someone revealing a dementia diagnosis can leave many at a loss for how to engage. Efforts to be supportive can be dampened by concerns of saying or doing the wrong thing. Worse, not knowing what to say or do, some individuals distance themselves from diagnosed individuals, further deepening the sadness, stigma and isolation people living with Alzheimer's and dementia can experience in the wake of a diagnosis.

Dealing with Dementia Caregiver Anger

It’s a lot of little things. I’ve never had to worry about mum eating anything strange before. I could leave the room without worrying that whatever was within reaching distance would not go in her mouth.  Not anymore!

The other day, I saw mum mistaking tissues for food for the first time.  She was dipping tissues in her tea and then putting them into her mouth.  I just jumped up automatically and shouted for her to stop. I thought she was eating the tissues.

São muitas pequenas coisas. Nunca tive que me preocupar com o fato de mamãe comer algo estranho antes. Eu podia sair do quarto sem me preocupar se o que estivesse ao alcance da mão não entraria em sua boca.  Agora não mais!

Outro dia, pela primeira vez, vi minha mãe confundir lenços de papel com comida.  Ela estava mergulhando lenços de papel no chá e depois os colocando na boca.  Automaticamente, dei um pulo e gritei para que ela parasse. Achei que ela estava comendo os lenços.
